How we test an engine before it ships

Every engine is compression tested on each cylinder and the figures are written on the listing — not summarised as "tested", but printed, so you can judge them yourself. We run a leak-down test alongside it, because compression alone tells you there is a problem but not whether it is rings or valves.

The oil is inspected for coolant, metal and sludge, and the engine is turned over by hand to check for binding before it is ever run. External damage, mounting points and accessory brackets are photographed.

What mileage should you accept?

Mileage matters, but it matters less than how the engine was run. A 90,000-mile engine from a serviced highway car will usually outlast a 60,000-mile engine from a neglected one, which is why we publish the donor vehicle and its odometer reading rather than a grade alone.

For most petrol engines, under 100,000 miles with clean oil and even compression figures is a sound buy. Where we know more about the donor — service history, why the vehicle was written off — we say so on the listing.

Used OEM versus new

A used OEM engine is the original unit, built by the manufacturer, that ran in a real car. A new engine from the manufacturer is the same design with no miles on it, and usually costs several times as much — often more than an older vehicle is worth.

We sell used OEM only. The reason is honesty about what you are getting: a tested original unit with published compression figures and a known donor is something you can actually evaluate, at a price that makes the repair worth doing.

Signs your engine is failing

Knocking or rattling that changes with engine speed, blue smoke from the exhaust, coolant or oil where the other should be, persistent overheating, or a sudden drop in power and economy. Metal in the oil is the one that ends the conversation.

Before replacing an engine, it is worth confirming the diagnosis — a failed head gasket, a bad sensor or a timing problem can produce similar symptoms for a fraction of the cost. Call us and describe what it is doing; we would rather sell you nothing than sell you an engine you did not need.

What to replace at the same time

While the engine is out, replace anything that is cheap now and expensive later: timing belt or chain if it is service-due, water pump, thermostat, all gaskets and seals, oil and filter, spark plugs, and the clutch if it is a manual. Motor mounts are worth checking.

Fluids should be fresh on first start, and the cooling system flushed. An engine that fails early after a swap has usually been let down by something around it rather than by itself.

Common questions

Will it fit my car?

Every part is matched to your VIN before it ships. Give us the VIN and we confirm the exact year, engine and trim the part came from and whether it fits yours — that check happens before you are charged, not after delivery.

What warranty comes with it?

Warranty up to 1 year. The exact term depends on the part and is shown on its listing, so you know it before you buy rather than after. Your order number is your warranty number — there is no separate certificate to keep.

How long does delivery take?

Most parts ship to all 50 states in 3–5 business days. If yours needs longer, we tell you before dispatch. Delivery is charged separately, and you see the exact charge before you pay: on the product page and at checkout for listed parts, or in your quote for parts we source. Canada delivery is confirmed at quote.

Are these new or used?

OEM used parts only — never aftermarket, never a third-party copy. Every unit came off a real vehicle and is tested before it leaves us.

Do I need to swap parts over from my old engine?

Usually some — manifolds, sensors, brackets and sometimes the flywheel, depending on what the engine ships as. Ask us what a specific unit includes and we will tell you exactly what you will need to move across.
